Hope for Maragua — Our Medical Mission in Kenya

In Maragua, a region in Kenya with over 1.2 million people, there is a lack of medical care — particularly for children and adolescents with serious injuries or rare diseases. For many, this means a life without hope of healing.

This is where our mission starts.

A six-person medical team, consisting of specialists in plastic surgery, anaesthesia and experienced surgical staff, traveled as part of an aid campaign run by the association Cheira to Maragua. Our goal: to give children and adolescents a new perspective on life through surgery — free of charge, safely and with a lot of heart.

Our local team:

> Dr. Christian Niehus (plastic surgery, board member Cheira)

> Dr. Hans Peter Kern (plastic surgery)

> Dr. Jürgen Rauh (anaesthesia)

> Cleo Heuss (surgical care)

> Corinne Schneebeli (surgical care)

> Irma Barmettler (anesthetic care)

A small hospital awaited us on site — overloaded, underserved and yet full of commitment. Together with the local medical team, we operated under the simplest conditions. We treated malformations, injuries and illnesses for which there would otherwise be no treatment there. At the same time, we worked on long-term improvements: We developed concepts, trained local staff and strengthened structures for a better medical future.

This mission was more than just a mission.

It was a sign of solidarity. A journey of humanity. And a small but significant step towards better medical care in Maragua.

All of this was made possible by Cheira — an association that is committed to bringing plastic surgery help in developing countries to where it is needed most urgently.
